hide/unhide comments?!   |

So, it seems that implementing the hide/unhide comments option wasn't to everybody's liking - damn. The idea behind it was to keep the focus on the photo as the page was beginning to get cluttered (and there are still 2 more links we want placed on the page). Admittedly, some other people like it (that's why we applied it in the first place). Once suggestion going round is to make it an option in the preferences. The only problem with that is there will be a noticeable inconsistency between sites and this could detract from the ease of using the site. thoughts?

Not being one to keep my opinions to myself I will start the discussion...my £0.02

I liked in principle but in practice it hasn't worked for me. It's extra unnecessary clicking to either read or post a comment. If you were to keep the hide/unhide feature I think you could place the 'leave comment' fields open at the top and have hidden/unhidden comments underneath.

Incidentally have you noticed a difference in the number of comments left since introducing the feature? I have only noticed a change based on the strength of the thumbnail for my shots. If it's brightly coloured then I get more traffic than a subtle black and white.
John: Lol. We've monitored the number of comments and there doesn't seem to be a drop. Rather, past 2 days a lot of pple have been posting great shots (P.S. loved your mini-series on Manahattan skyline) and there has been an increase in comments. Nevertheless, if our users don't like it then we have to do something about it. I'm beginning to warm to your idea of leaving at least the comments box visible...you seem to be on a roll with good suggestions!

I like it. It truly makes the page less cluttered. But leaving one or two of the latest comments and having a link saying view all comments sounds good
John: Hmmm....So, show the latest comment and have immediate access to the comments form? I think it's getting toasty.

Maybe Simon should be given a medel or something for his suggestions.

I liked not having to click to open the comments. Just my 2 cents.

I did e-mail you all about making the red ShMood the default because I always forget about it, and then nobody comments.

Also...it would be nice to know if someone comments on your comment. If I leave a comment on someones blog, and they respond, I have no way of knowing that they did this unless I check back. Sometimes I forget where I left comments. It would be nice to be able to search all my comments or something like that.
John: We agree with you there on the Red ShMood. As putting it in the preferences will not be intrusive, your wish is our command - it shall be done.

Mike - the comment thing is a preference setting. You can set it so that you always receive the response to the comment you leave by email.

Jide - no medals thanks I just have an overactive mind and this is an outlet. If I was better at photography then I would probably put my efforts there.

Etomi makes a good point. You could have the latest comment and the leave comments box appear default and all other comments a click away?

Retraction sorry, being a numbskull, you get email responses simply by leaving your email at the time of posting your comment I think. At least when I respond to a comment, if the person has left their email I get a message to tell me they have been emailed with the response.

I guess I was looking for the "my threads" thing like they have over at DPreview. I can click that and follow all the threads (comments) I have made. But I guess this will work too.

About the hide/show comments function.
At first I didn't really like it, but now im getting used to it, but it still is rather annoying to keep clicking, that sounds really lazy but thats the way it is. It get old, really fast.

John, I agree with you on the inconsistancy if put as an option, but you have to consider that the photobloggers want certain things on their page and they really might not care about whats on someone elses. I think the users should have an option to choose whether they want it in there or not.

Also, here is a suggestion. I'm not sure if you've noticed but when someone makes one comment about the photo, the rest follow suit and say the EXACT SAME THING 16 or 26 times over. Nothing new or substantial is coming out of the comments. So what if you could reverse the order of the comments. The newest ones go on top and the old ones on the bottom. Then again, they could still scroll down and read or the trend could follow upwards instead of downward. Blast, never mind.
